A Good Daughter...

B"H

...Makes Shabbos For Her Mama

But, there was no daughter, there were no children, and so Yosef lit the candles for his beloved Lina, he said the Kiddush, and he held the two loaves of challah close while he said the Motzi.  Lina always could speak to him on Friday night, ... to tell him good Shabbos... and she could always smile back at him when he kissed her a good Shabbos.  It was just the two of them.  And some rabbis tried to take even that away from them.  What had the world come to be?

Lina was in a nursing home.  And Yosef lived in the Blackstone, a residential hotel.  He did not see much difference between the two places except that he could come and go as he pleased and Lina could not.  But she did not want to go anywhere.  The entire week she would sit and look out the window.  Yosef always came to have lunch and dinner with her.  She would eat but say nothing and show nothing... no recognition of any one, not even Yosef.  BUT, on Shabbos, for a few moments the angels blessed this couple with loving glances and tender exchanges.  On Shabbos, Lina came alive for candles, Kiddush, and challah.  And Yosef lived for these moments.

Life is precious.  We are all connected.  We keep vigil with our loved ones, our mentors, our guides.  There are more of them than we could ever know.

May we finish with the consolations of this season and prepare ourselves for our return to our beloved Creator as we approach the holiday season.
